Gary Taubes is a know-it-all he has memorized facts and made observations and now he's sharing his hypotheses with the world.
He has a book out about nutrition called, Why We Get Fat, and What to Do About It. (Knopf) Taubes has mainly made a name for himself by calling leading scientists in the field of nutrition frauds and incompetents all because he knows fat joggers and dieters who took eight years to lose two pounds. During a Women's Health Intiative and the two pounds was the average spread amongst 20,000 women.
Taubes belief is that carbs are the enemy and you may have heard it before, even from Fat B Austin Powers' nemesis. All those who bow at the altar of Atkins are the choir he's preaching to and by his bookselling numbers there are quite a few.
The problem is medical science and the scientific community in general don't agree with him. Having a low-carb diet is hard on the kidneys and can cause other health problems. Usually diet and exercise is the key to permanent weight loss but Taubes is determined to go against the grain and say what he believes and put it in print.
I personally don't believe in one size fits all for anything but Taubes can't say it any more than any other nuturitionist can.
